Potty Training Wisdoms for All Ages

When I was pregnant with Mami, I started researching EVERYTHING that had to do with becoming a mother, birth, taking care of your baby, etc, so that I could make the best decisions I was capable of, based on my knowledge, experience, beliefs and preferences. Since I had already been heavily converted to vegetarianism and healthy living, I used as many natural and/or organic household items (like laundry detergent, general cleansers, air fresheners, etc), body and beauty items (like soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, makeup, perfume, deodorant, etc), but being a mother brought up many new areas of never before experienced decisions and areas of new learning. Things like having a natural birth or using drugs, having a mid-wife or a doctor, hospital birth or home birth, breastfeeding or bottle feeding, cloth diapers or disposable diapers, etc.

And if you are also a parent, you know that is just the beginning… You then begin to encounter all the stages and experiences that come up in conjunction with being a parent. Difficulties with nursing, ear infections, tongue and lip ties, no tears flowing when they cry, inconsolable crying, colic, are they developing at the “right pace”, and so on.

I learned so many things prompted simply by being a parent and wanting to do the best for my children that was possible for me at the time, and now that Mami is going through many of these same things, it is through our conversations that I am prompted once again, on occasion, to research on some current topic of interest.

So what has come up lately?

Potty training!

It is so amazing (once again) to see what is out there now that was not available back when my kids were small or growing up – or at least I was completely unaware of it at that time.

Mami mentioned that she thinks Mr. Sweetie may be ready for potty training due to some of his behavior.

I decided it was time to check into potty options, etc and found some very interesting things – even a surprise for the whole family!

First, I really liked the pointers shared in the “7 Signs Your Child Is Ready For Potty Training” post by MamaNatural (read all the pointers in detail here). She points out that such things as taking pride in their own accomplishments and having more independence, not liking to have a dirty diaper on, going to a more isolated place to go #2, verbally indicating that they have/are peeing, showing interest when other people or animals go potty, having a desire to sit on the potty.

She also reminds all of us to keep the learning how and when to potty experience a positive one. You definitely want to set your sweetie(s) up for a lifetime of feeling good about using the bathroom.

The next topic I started checking out was potty options.

I found a couple that were quite popular and had very high feedback ratings. The first one was the BabyBjorn Potty Chair (check it out here). This is said to have a sturdy construction, an ergonomic design and be easy to clean!

The other one was the Summer Infant ‘Lil Loo Potty (check it out here). It is featured as having a splash guard for boys and a removable cup for quick and easy cleaning.

But my very favorite one is one that is potentially usable and beneficial for the whole family! That’s right, in my search I was introduced to the Squatty Potty (check out their highly entertaining video here). On their site, they go in to much further detail about how we can optimally assist our bodies in pooping in the most beneficial way. Turns out sitting does not aid our bodies the best. Squatting more like our ancestors did has extreme benefit in helping to prevent or reduce things like constipation, hemorrhoids, colon disease, urinary difficulty/infections and pelvic floor issues (check out their guide on all this here).

I found all this very enlightening and plan to pass on the info to Mami as well as check into getting our own Squatty Potty to see if I notice any benefits. I will keep you posted about any recommendations based on my experience. In the meantime, if you or anyone you know suffers from the above conditions (like hemorrhoids or constipation), besides making dietary changes and drinking more high quality water, they can also get one of these to see if that helps them as well.

I hope your life is filled with on-going learning that brings you enjoyment, health and happiness… and better bowel functioning!  : )

Please feel free to share this post and information with anyone you know who you feel would benefit from it.

Blessings to you and thank you for all the loving parenting you do; it makes a better world, one Sweetie at a time.

Hug attached,

Koolma  : )
